Almost from its inception, pioneers of the fledgling Swan River Colony were aware of the deadly threat posed to their enterprise by incursions of ship-borne disease. What followed was a long and often heated debate resulting in Woodman Point being selected as the location for the colony's primary quarantine facility. In the years which followed, overseas calamities such as war, pandemics and economic depression have often provided back-drops to the daily work undertaken by the dedicated staff at the small quarantine station surrounded by bush land a short distance from Fremantle, the port it served so well.
