661 Battery ACK Troop, V.D.C, circa 1944 [photograph]
Photographs, etc
661 Light Anti-Aircraft Battery (LAA Bty) were a company of volunteers who maintained the Western Australian coastal defences during World War Two. As members of the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) they were subject to military command and training, but carried out their duties in addition to their everyday work. Men from this battery were probably local to the Fremantle area, and were often picked up from South Fremantle to be taken to drill and training elsewhere in Perth. Prior to June 1943 they had been known as 661 Company (Coy) and had been under the command of the regular Army. They became a battery on being transferred to the command of the Royal Australian Artillery (RAA).Photograph probably taken at the Fremantle War Memorial on Monument Hill.
