Australian Aboriginal people have been on this continent for at least 68 000 years and have had a continuously developing and increasingly sophisticated culture over a time when the climate changed through an entry into, survival through and recovery from the last of the great Ice Ages. While the last 200 years of European settlement on this continent has meant that much Aboriginals history has been lost forever, many Aboriginal oral traditions survive having been passed on through many previous generations. Fortunately, many stories and the history encased in them are coming to light in recent times. Over the last 40-50 years, increasing efforts have been made to work with Aboriginal people to record the history of the various cultures that did exist or still exist across Australia. This book does not pretend to cover all the stories but aims to highlight some snippets of the increasingly complex story of Aboriginal Australian history and tradition. The range of activities included in this book has been designed so that they may be useful in the context of different disciplines within the school curriculum.
