Visiting old colleague, Ken Flatlet, in an Edinburgh nursing home brings home to Inspector Rebus that he, too, is getting older, and may well end up in such a place. Ken is troubled by the fact that several of the apparently healthy people in the home have suddenly died. To put his mind at rest, Rebus promises to dig around to see if someone is doing some drastic bed-clearing.
